Pen Underwriting, the multi-class multi-territory managing general agent (MGA), has appointed Darren Glover as Senior Development Underwriter for Northern Ireland. Darren joins Pen’s Commercial Risk Managed team, which serves brokers and clients across the UK, expanding its network of dedicated underwriting expertise to Northern Ireland.
Darren brings more than 30 years’ experience across the full spectrum of property, casualty and property owners’ risks. Having started his career as a commercial insurance broker, he has first-hand knowledge of what brokers are looking for. Darren has since held various senior development underwriter and underwriting manager roles, all based in Northern Ireland.
He joins from fellow MGA Generation Underwriting, where he has been Northern Ireland Underwriting Manager since 2021, before which he worked at MS Amlin, Chubb, Zurich and RSA. The recruitment of a Belfast-based development underwriter further expands Pen’s existing established UK regional network, making it easier for brokers in Northern Ireland to trade with Pen and for their clients to benefit from Pen’s wide range of tailored risk solutions.
Darren will be responsible for the broker-focused expansion of Pen’s risk management-led commercial insurance business in Northern Ireland, as well as the management and underwriting performance of the portfolio, with Northern Ireland identified as a key region for growth. He will report into Gordon Williams, Regional Underwriting Manager for Scotland & Northern Ireland at Pen Underwriting and work closely with Barry McCormick, Pen’s Business Development Manager for Scotland & Northern Ireland.
Rob Chapman, Managing Director of Commercial Risk Managed at Pen, said: “Darren is well-known and respected across the Northern Irish commercial insurance market, and will be central to realising our ambitious growth plans for the region through closer working with brokers in support of their clients. Our risk-management led commercial combined proposition is all about creating a virtuous circle of improvement and broker-client relationships that stand the test of time.
“Pen has long been keen to have dedicated underwriting resource and expertise on-the-ground in Northern Ireland and Darren brings exactly the right depth of experience and market knowledge to the role. I’m delighted he has chosen to join Pen and our team of empowered underwriting specialists, keen to trade and tailor solutions to client need.”
Darren Glover commented: “I’m excited by the opportunity for Pen here in Northern Ireland, where the economy is growing at double the rate of the wider UK economy(1) and brokers are always keen to build relationships with markets that mix flexibility and responsiveness with sector expertise, sustainable underwriting and best-in-class product suites. I’m looking forward to being part of the team to expand Pen’s presence in Northern Ireland and contribute to its future success.”
